The Museum of Kosovo ( Albanian  Muzeu i Kosovës , Serbian Музеј Косова Muzej Kosova ) is the largest and most important museum in Kosovo . It is located in the capital Pristina and was founded in 1949. The collection contains over 50,000 artifacts. Another 1,200 objects are to be brought back from Belgrade in the future .

Tasks and organization

The museum was established in 1949 for the preservation, restoration, conservation and presentation of the cultural heritage from the territory of what is now the Republic of Kosovo. It is divided into four organizational departments: archeology and numismatics, ethnology, modern history and nature.

The Ethnological Museum

The museum's exhibits and artifacts are displayed and stored in three buildings. The main building is located on Ibrahim Lutfiu Haxhi Zeka Street , just behind the Çarshi Mosque in the historic city center. It was built in 1889 in the Austro-Hungarian style, initially for military purposes. Two halls are used for exhibition collections and one for special exhibitions. The inner courtyard and the archaeological park (lapidarium) near the main building are also used for various exhibitions. The third floor of the building is the workplace of the Archaeological Institute of Kosovo.

The Ethnological Museum is an integral part of the Museum of Kosovo. It is housed in four historical buildings on Henrik Barić Street in the north of the old town, two of which were built in the 18th and two in the 19th century. The building complex is named after Emin Gjika , a local merchant. The museum of Kosovo has housed the ethnological collection there since 2006.

The House of Independence is the third and last part of the museum and collects artifacts, photographs, documents and the like, which are themed about the independence of the Republic of Kosovo in 2008.
