The municipal library ( Albanian  Biblioteka ndërkomunale ) in Pristina was founded in February 1945. Initially, it had 1,300 media in Albanian and Serbian, as well as a further small media collection of brochures and booklets from the war period, which were exhibited in an adjoining building. In 1947, just two years after its opening, all media were moved to the current building, where the library has continued its work ever since. After the closure of the then Central Library of the then Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metochia ( Albanian  Krahina Autonome e Kosoves dhe Metohise ), ( Serbian - Cyrillic Аутономна Покрајина Косово и и Метохија ) was assigned to its library in 1953. From then until 1956 it was the only central library for the entire territory of Kosovo .

Official foundation and changing official names

Documents show, however, that the library was officially recognized by the Pristina city administration only on April 12, 1963 under the name of Miladin Popovic People's Library . In the following years the library was renamed several times and reappointed the name Miladin Popovic. From 1993 to 1999 it was given the Serbian name Grada Biblioteka after the autonomy of Kosovo was abolished . After the Serbian state apparatus withdrew after the Kosovo war , it continued to be referred to variously, for example as Biblioteka e Qytetit Hivzi Sylejmani (City Library Hivzi Sylejmani), Biblioteka Rajonale Hivzi Sylejmani (Regional Library Hivzi Sylejmani) or Biblioteka Sylejzi Sylejmani Library ) or Biblioteka Hivzi Sylejmani Library.
