The Museum of Cieszyn Silesia ( Polish: Muzeum Śląska Cieszyńskiego ) is the city museum of Cieszyn ( German  Cieszyn ) of the historical landscape of Cieszyn Silesia , Silesian Voivodeship , in Poland .

history

The Larysch Palace was built by the Larisch family between 1790 and 1796 after the great fire of Teschen in 1789 . In 1918 the palace was acquired by the city and in 1931 it became the seat of the city museum. This goes back to the museum of the pastor Leopold Jan Szersznik (founded in 1802, later named Scherschnik Museum in Teschen in German), the Folklore Museum of Silesia (founded in 1903) and the existing municipal collection.

On the opposite bank of the Olsa river , in the Czech town of Český Těšín , a similarly named Muzeum Těšínska ( Těšínsko = Cieszyn Silesia in Czech) was opened in 1948 , which works closely with the Polish Museum.

Exhibitions

There are eight permanent galleries in the museum. The most famous exhibit is the Gothic sculpture of the "Teschener Madonna" (around 1375/80) from the workshop of Peter Parler .
