Museum of Ethnology Burgdorf

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Museum für Völkerkunde Burgdorf has been located in Burgdorf Castle in Burgdorf BE since 2001 . It houses objects from New Guinea ( Nias , Bali ), but also from Africa ( Ethiopia / Abyssinia ) and Asia (South India).

The first curator of the museum, founded in 1908 as the "Schiffmann'sche Sammlung", was Arnold Kordt until 1938 . Many of the exhibits come from the estate of Heinrich Schiffmann , the son of successful Burgdorf cheese exporters, who acquired many ethnographic objects on his travels and bequeathed them to the city.

With an annual budget of CHF 43,000 and a staff of 40 percent (2011), the museum is one of the smaller museums in Switzerland. For lack of money, many exhibits are not properly stored in a screed for conservation purposes and are therefore exposed to deterioration due to temperature and humidity fluctuations.
