The Music & PC was a music magazine that deals with the PC employed and capabilities for the production and processing of music.

General

From 1997 to 2010 Music & PC informed its readers about general topics related to hardware and software for a powerful music PC. The magazine was published by the specialist publisher Schiele & Schön in Berlin, and Helge Beckmann has been editor-in-chief since 2009.

The target groups of Music & PC were both experienced professionals and ambitious hobby musicians without much experience who were interested in the necessary and possible technical requirements of a music processing computer.

History & Philosophy

The tendency to produce electronic music with computers, which became apparent as early as 1950 , culminated in the 1980s with an almost widespread focus on the digitization of music . This development became the mid-1990s a whole new meaning when the production of electronic music by ever more powerful computers and basically accessible hardware and software for the average person moved within reach.

The first edition of Music & PC was published during this time of the 'democratization' of electronic music, although its old name could still be read on the title page: PC & Musik. The fact that the PC was still in the foreground or in the first place of the title at that time is explained by the understanding that the recording and production of music by computer was still considered a special feature.

When the magazine was taken over by the Berlin specialist publisher Schiele & Schön in 2007, after having been published for ten years by the Tetrix publishing house in Eschwege , the name was changed to Music & PC. The aim of this campaign was to shift the focus of reporting even further into the field of music production . At the same time, however, the new title also symbolizes the technical progress that has simplified work on music computers to such an extent that the music comes back to the fore.

Content

Music & PC mainly dealt with practical issues. Technical means and methods were described that are necessary or possible for the production and processing of music on the computer. The focus of the reporting was on tests and descriptions of relevant hardware and software - including digital instruments , synthesizers , microphones , cables, plug-ins and MIDI controllers , but also sampling CDs and software.

In addition to these practice-oriented articles on working on the music PC, regular workshops on complex topics are also offered in Music & PC, which bring the above media closer to you. The recipient can find out more about the hard disk recording process , the creation of MIDI signals or the processing of music using various electronic means. In addition, news was reported in the areas of music on the Internet, podcasts and MP3 .

Up until the beginning of 2009, the magazine was accompanied by a CD that supplements the topics dealt with in the magazine. It contains multimedia extensions to individual articles, the content of which it illustrates both visually and acoustically. For example, it is used to show the differences in sound between the various tube microphones being tested. The supplement was discontinued with the 03/2009 issue and can be downloaded from the Music & PC homepage.

Circulation and distribution

Music & PC was already appearing every two months under its name PC & Musik, and this rhythm was maintained even after the relaunch. The specialist magazine was available throughout Germany, and it was also available abroad by subscription.
