The music festival Musica Franconia is a concert series that takes place every year between June and August and until 2012 was entitled Fränkischer Sommer, Musica Franconia . The festival, which has existed since 1987, deals with early music , in particular with the music of composers who lived or were born in Franconia from the Middle Ages to the early 19th century. In addition, contemporary works are also repeatedly performed. The concerts mainly take place in the Middle Franconia region , often at historical venues, churches and monasteries or as open-air events. Many artists feel committed to historical performance practice . The motto of the series changed annually. For example, in 2005 it was minstrels in Franconia . The focus of the 2008 program with a total of 39 concerts was flute music.

The festival is run by the Gesellschaft Musica Franconia eV association. The director is Wolfgang Riedelbauch . From 2000 to 2012 the festival was supported by the Middle Franconia district , which opened up extended financial opportunities for the festival. In addition to up to 50 concerts, marketplace operas were also performed.

The attempt to extend the concert series to all of Franconia did not meet with approval from the Central Franconia district. He withdrew as a sponsor and founded his own festival under the title Fränkischer Sommer without a pronounced temporal or thematic focus. This took place for the first time in 2013.

The festival has been organized under the name Musica Franconia since 2013 and in 2014 again includes eleven concerts of early music in the greater Nuremberg area. In 2015 there were 14 concerts over five weekends and in 2016 10 concerts, including an opera and several large church concerts. In addition, Thomas Goppel , Member of the State Parliament and President of the Bavarian Music Council, was won over as patron .
