Mustafa Balel (2006)

Mustafa Balel (born September 1, 1945 in Sivas , Turkey ) is a Turkish writer .

After studying French at Gazi Üniversitesi in Ankara until 1968, he did his master's degree at the University of Poitiers in France (1971-72). He returned to Turkey, worked as a teacher at secondary schools in Ardahan (1968–70), Sivas (1972–75) and Istanbul, and at the Ataturk Training Institute (1978–80).

He was co-editor of the Larousse Encyclopedia (1986–1992) and of “Axis” (1997–2001); he also published the literary magazine "Öykü" (1975–76, 8 issues).

He has published short stories, articles and translations in Yugoslav, Bulgarian, Russian, French, Brazilian, Romance and Iranian magazines.

His stories combine contemporary storytelling techniques with traditional storytelling, which is shaped by psychological analysis. In his works he suggests that even in ostensibly exclusively patriarchal societies (i.e. the Turkish) structures of a matriarchy persist.

He won the narrator award at the 12th Antalya Literature Festival with his story Can Eriği (Plum, 1975) and the award at the Theater Festival of the Turkish Opera and Ballet Foundation with his play Gün Vurgunu (1984).
