In 1790, the Korean King Jeongjo commissioned a book called Muye Dobo Tongji (also "Muyedobotongji"), which translates as "illustrated martial arts manual". This book, written by Yi Deok-mu ( 이덕무 , 1741–1793) and Pak Je-ga ( 박제가 , 1750–1805), describes in detail many weapon techniques and, in one chapter, also unarmed fighting techniques. The latter are called " Kwon Beop " in Muye Dobo Tongji . The book was published in four volumes, with an additional volume in which the original Chinese characters ( Hanja ) are represented in Korean script ( Hangeul ).

The martial arts described in the Muye Dobo Tongji were reconstructed in the 20th century, from which the martial arts Sippal Gi ("18 techniques") and Muye 24 Gi ("martial art of 24 techniques") arose. The latter is also called 24 Ban Muye .

The Muye Dobo Tongji is an extension of the older books Muye Sinbo and Muye Jebo, which in turn are based on the Ji Xiao Xin Shu (紀 效 新書, "Manual of New Military Tactics") by the Chinese general Qi Ji-Guang (1528–1588) .

In October 2017, at the request of North Korea , the work was included in the UNESCO World Document Heritage List . It is the country's only entry in this register to date.
