MyDefrag (formerly JkDefrag) is a freeware defragmentation and optimization program for Windows computers that rearranges fragmented hard disks in three steps (analyze, defragment and optimize). It distributes the data in three zones, in directories, contiguous files and large files.
The optimization process of the data is carried out by assigning and sorting it into the zones provided for it according to file name, access time, size, etc. The existing implementation of a DLL library means that MyDefrag can also be used from programming languages.
Development and construction
The predecessor JkDefrag was developed and published by Jeroen Kessels in 2004 as a free open source defragmentation tool for Windows.
In 2008, JkDefrag was renamed MyDefrag by its developer. The most important change is the inclusion of a scripting language. MyDefrag is based on the standard programming interface (API) of the defragmentation program from Microsoft, which is always included with Windows. All versions are built on the basis of this API.
MyDefrag features a graphical user interface and wrap-around fragmentation. This means that basically non-relocatable sectors are linked with data that is already conventionally fragmented. As a result, the number of empty data spaces should be minimized and more data should be loaded into the faster areas of the hard disk. The MyDefrag scripts included use existing Windows prefetch files.
In June 2015, Jeroen Kessels announced the closure of the software website on October 1, 2015. He considers further development of the five-year-old software to be unlikely, but does not rule it out completely. A release of the source code of MyDefrag is not an option for him, as he has licensed it to several customers. In contrast, JkDefrag's LGPL- licensed open source source code is still available from various sources, even if it is not on the original homepage.
