Mylochromis ( Syn .: Maravichromis Eccles & Trewavas 1989 , Platygnathochromis Eccles & Trewavas 1989 ) is a cichlid - genus , which is endemic in the East African Malawisee occurs.

features

Mylochromis species are about 15 to 22 cm long and have the typical shape of a Haplochromis relative. The genus lacks morphological peculiarities. It summarizes Lake Malawi cichlids that show a dark diagonal stripe that extends from the "neck" to the tail stalk, but, unlike other genera with diagonal stripes such as Buccochromis and Lichnochromis, are not characterized by any other special features. In some species, the stripe can also be broken up into a row of spots. The scientific name refers to the pharyngeal teeth ( Greek : "mylo" = mill + "chromis" = old name for cichlids).

Way of life

Like almost all cichlids in Lake Malawi, the Mylochromis species are mouthbrooders . They live mainly in the sand zone and in the transition zone between sandy and rocky habitats, some species also in the rock zone.
