The Transbaikal blind mole rat ( Myospalax psilurus ) is a member of the Spalacidae family . The animals are between 15-27 centimeters tall, the length of the tail is 3-7 centimeters.

description

The animals have a brown, short fur. They have long, sharp claws on their fore and hind limbs, which the animals use to dig. The forehead is very short. There are long whiskers below the nose. The two white spots below the nose and mouth are striking. The short, barely hairy tail is white. The eyes are very small and the outer auricles are completely absent.

distribution and habitat

This species occurs in the region of Trans-Baikal , Khabarovsk , the Amur Oblast , in eastern Mongolia, the Chinese provinces of Szechuan , Shaanxi and continue until Hebei ago. They inhabit the steppe landscape there.

Way of life and reproduction

These animals inhabit long, self-dug underground tunnels. They feed on roots, tubers and other parts of plants. In rare exceptional cases they left their buildings to avoid the danger of being preyed on by birds of prey such as owls . They store supplies in their burrows for the winter. Reproduction takes place in spring. The female gives birth to up to 6 young per litter.

Hazards and protective measures

Although individual subspecies are endangered, the species is still relatively widespread and is therefore classified by the IUCN as ( Least concern ).
