Mzwane

The white wine variety Mzwane ( Georgian მწვანე , German: Green ) is an autochthonous variety from Georgia . Today it is cultivated in many of the successor states of the USSR, especially in Georgia and the Ukraine , there especially on the Crimea peninsula and in the region around Odessa . Mzwane means green in the Georgian language and alludes to the rich green of the grapes.

In Georgia, the Mzwane is considered to be of very high quality. It is used to make fruity, very aromatic white wines and dessert wines . But it also gives its name to a sparkling wine in the Georgian area around Manawi. It is sufficiently frost-resistant and has proven to be quite resistant to phylloxera . However, it is susceptible to powdery mildew .
