Religious meaning

According to Deuteronomy , Mount Nebo is the mountain from which Moses was allowed to see the Promised Land, but had to die without having set foot on it himself ( Dtn 32.48–50  EU , Dtn 34.1–5  EU ). The religious significance of this mountain was recognized by Pope Benedict XVI. on his pilgrimage to the holy places on May 9, 2009 in the following way: "From this holy mountain Moses directs our gaze [...] to the fulfillment of all the promises of God in Christ."

A church was built on the top of the mountain around 393 and has been redesigned since then. The ancient bishopric of the same name was not on the mountain, but in the Byzantine city of the same name, 3 km away. The Roman Catholic titular diocese of Neve (Nebo) referred to this place until Vatican II .

In the 7th century, the summit of Mount Nebo was a popular destination for pilgrims. There are only a few remains of the original church - stone blocks and parts of the mosaic floor.

The present church on the Nebo has been owned by the Catholic Franciscan Order since 1932 . In it mosaics with hunting scenes, lions and gazelles are exhibited. The baptistery from 531 AD contains a mosaic from the 6th century, also with depictions of animals. In addition, a modern monastery was built for the Franciscans, which also houses archaeologists.
