features

With a head-to-trunk length of 11.5 to 13 cm and a tail length of 10.1 to 12.5 cm, the northern mountain tip squirrel is the smallest species of tip squirrel . The ears are about 18 mm high and the length of the rear foot is 27 to 30 mm. No data are available on the weight of the animals. The back of the animals is dark brown, the belly beige to light orange. The face is dark brown. A red-brown stripe runs above and below the eyes. The tail is covered with thick, blackish brown hair.

Way of life

The northern mountain shrewfish lives mainly in evergreen rainforests, but also occurs in various mixed forests, in secondary forests, bamboo thickets without a treetop above and in the vegetation along streams in the middle of rocky savannas from sea level up to heights of about 1500 meters. It is shy and has only been observed during the day, but it is not yet known whether it is also active at other times. The animals live on small trees and in bushes at heights of 30 cm to 3 meters above the ground and only enter it to switch between different groups of trees. The northern mountain pointed squirrel feeds mainly on insects and various fruits. A stomach examination of one specimen revealed various beetles. Almost nothing is known about the reproduction of the animals. In the province of Mondulkiri in the east of Cambodia and in the National Park Cát Tiên in the south of Vietnam, pairs of the animals were observed in April and June, which suggests that their mating season may be during these months.

Danger

The Northern Mountain Pointing Squirrel is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN . In parts of its range it is observed relatively often in others it is rare.
