NASA / IPAC Extragalactic Database

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The NASA / IPAC Extragalactic Database ( NED ) is an astronomical database for galaxies and other objects outside of our Milky Way. NED is operated by the Infrared Processing and Analysis Center IPAC of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology and funded by NASA .

NED contains a list of (October 2019) 1.1 billion objects, for which names from different catalogs are identified with one another and, as far as possible, exact positions in the sky and redshifts are given. NED contains other, for example, photometric data and images in optical and near infrared, references to publications relating to an object, and their summaries.

While NED only contains extragalactic objects, the SIMBAD database focuses on stars and other objects in our Milky Way .
