NATO activity in the Aegean (from 2016)
The NATO activity in the Aegean is the contribution of NATO to deal with the refugee and migration crisis in the Aegean . It was decided in February 2016 at the request of Germany , Greece and Turkey , with the initiative coming from the German government and in particular Chancellor Angela Merkel , with the aim of rapidly and significantly reducing the flow of refugees through the Aegean Sea. Given the urgency of the problem, the NATO decision was brought about in a great hurry.
Since there are no sovereign tasks to be performed in this mission, the German contribution did not have to be mandated by the German Bundestag .
With the mission, NATO intends to contribute to a picture of the situation for the Greek and Turkish coast guards and the European border agency Frontex . The NATO forces support these partners through maritime surveillance and the exchange of situation information. The aim is to improve the exchange of information and response times to support national authorities in their use against people smugglers and their networks.
The forces for this task are essentially provided by the Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 (SNMG2), which is subordinate to the Allied Maritime Command in Northwood . From February 2016 to June 2017, Germany continuously provided the commander of SNMG 2 and mostly the flagship. It is the first NATO activity in which the Albanian Navy participates with a warship .
In the initial phase from February 2016 to July 2017, the SNMG 2 was always led by a German admiral who was also responsible for activities in the Aegean Sea. Then a separate task force, Task Unit 1, was formed for these activities, which is always led by a German contingent leader with the rank of captain at sea . The rest of the SNMG 2 continues its routine operations in the Mediterranean as a task force .
