Axel Deertz

Axel Deertz (born December 24, 1965 ) is a German flotilla admiral and group leader 23 in the Federal Chancellery in Berlin .

Military background

Training and first uses

Deertz joined the German Navy with Crew VII / 85 and was trained as an officer at the Mürwik Naval School , on the " Gorch Fock " and the " Deutschland " . From 1986 to 1990 he studied electrical engineering at the " Helmut Schmidt University - University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg ". This was followed by training as a naval officer with the use of a watch officer and boat operations officer in the 2nd Schnellbootgeschwader in Olpenitz . From September 1993 to June 1994 Deertz was an operations and training officer in the French Navy on board the training ship " Jeanne d'Arc " in Brest , France . This was followed by a job as a boat operations officer with the 2nd Schnellbootgeschwader in Warnemünde . From 1995 to 1996 he took over command of S 45 “Leopard” in the 3rd Schnellbootgeschwader in Flensburg . After the extended specialist training, Deertz led the S 71 “Gepard” in the 7th Schnellbootgeschwader in Warnemünde.

Service as a staff officer

After completing the 41st Admiral Staff Course at the Command Academy of the German Armed Forces in Hamburg from 1999 to 2001 , he became an Admiral Staff Officer and joined the Plans & Policy Division of the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) in Mons ( Belgium ) as an Action Officer . From 2003 to 2004 he was deputy commander in the 7th Schnellbootgeschwader. During this use Deertz was also used as a contingent leader in Operation Active Endeavor in the Mediterranean . This was followed by a job as an adjutant at the inspector of the navy in Bonn . The subsequent employment from 2006 to 2009 as a speaker in the Federal Department of Defense was interrupted from 2008 to 2009 by training at the US Naval War College in Newport ( Rhode Island ) in the United States . In 2010 Deertz took over the management of the operational staff department in operational flotilla 1 in Kiel . In this post Deertz 2011 was as contingent leader of the maritime share of the military evacuation operation in Libya ( Operation Pegasus involved). In 2012 Deertz took part in the core seminar at the Federal Academy for Security Policy in Berlin and then became Head of the European Union Department at the German Military Representative at NATO and the EU in Brussels . From 2013 to 2016 Deertz was Head of the Fundamentals of Security Policy and Bilateral Relations in the Politics department at the Federal Ministry of Defense.

Service as an admiral

In 2016 he took up the post of sub-department head operation in the deployment department in the naval command in Rostock. On December 22nd, 2016 he took over the management of the Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 from Kay-Achim Schönbach . In this function he also led NATO activities in the Aegean in the context of the refugee crisis . He handed over this command to the British Commodore James Morley on June 30, 2017 in Souda, Greece . On May 1, 2018, he handed over the post as sub-department head in the naval command to Captain Henning Faltin . He succeeded Brigadier General Andreas Delp as group leader 23 (Federal Minister of Defense; Federal Security Council ) in the Federal Chancellery in Berlin.
