On February 8, 1988 a Fairchild Swearingen Metro crashed on the Nürnberger Flugdienst flight 108 from Hanover to Düsseldorf . The machine crashed shortly before landing.
course
The aircraft with the flight number NFD108 took off at 7.15 a.m. with a 15-minute delay from Hannover-Langenhagen Airport . Before preparing to land, the pilots discussed whether to avoid a thunderstorm zone near Düsseldorf, but they decided to fly through the thunderstorm. At 7:50 a.m., Flight 108 received clearance for the ILS approach to runway 24. At 7:50 a.m., Flight 108 disappeared from the radar and eyewitnesses on the ground saw an unlit machine between the clouds. Two minutes later, the rubble of Metro III hit the ground north of Essen - Kettwig near the Ruhr . All occupants died in the impact.
Cause of accident
After the reconstruction of the aircraft debris, a coin-sized area made of molten metal was found on the left wing root and the power distributor was also located there. There are many indications that the Metro III was struck by lightning and the power went out. As it was still dark, the pilots lost their bearings. As a result, the aircraft got into an uncontrolled flight condition, was overloaded and broke apart while still in the air.
