The NMBS / SNCB series 18 (Alsthom) was a Belgian locomotive series.
The series was a further development of the French SNCF CC 40100 for the Belgian state railways and was put into service between 1973 and 1974. The multi-system locomotives were intended for cross-border traffic and were mainly used on the routes from Belgium to Cologne and Paris . The six vehicles were numbered 1801 to 1806. In the meantime, all vehicles have been decommissioned and mostly scrapped.
Whereabouts:
HLE 1801
The 1801 was modernized in 1999 after its overhaul so that it could drive with the car of the I10 type, at the beginning of 2008 it was scrapped.
HLE 1802
The 1802 was parked in April 1997 due to excessive wear on the bogies and was scrapped in Courcelles-Motte in July 2009 after more than 12 years of idle time in Kinkempois.
HLE 1803
The 1803 should be scrapped after its shutdown, but came under the hammer and was sold to the Rails & Traction company to put the locomotive back into operation and to be able to use it in front of work trains in Switzerland, since these modifications were more extensive than expected and the Locomotive was actually not suitable for the low speeds of such trains, the locomotive was parked in Raeren at the Vennbahn , where they stayed together with 1806 until 2012, until they were transferred via Aachen West to Eastern Europe and were scrapped there.
HLE 1804
The 1804 was also taken out of service in 1997 and used as a spare part donor for the other HLE 18 locomotives. Just like the HLE 1802, it was parked in Kinkempois for 12 years and scrapped in Courcelles-Motte in July 2009.
HLE 1805
The 1805 is the only surviving representative of this series. In 2000 the PFT got the opportunity to buy the locomotive from the NMBS . However, a clause has been included in the sales contract so that it cannot be lent to potential private operators. The train protection and the on-board radio have also been removed so that they can no longer be used in the Infrabel network, although the locomotive is actually still operational. It is at the PFT in Saint-Ghislain and is exhibited there together with many other old locomotives from the NMBS .
HLE 1806
The 1806 suffered the same fate as 1803, it was sold to the company Rails & Traction to be used in Switzerland, as the planned modifications were too extensive, it was brought to Raeren to the Vennbahn as in 1803 . Until they were scrapped together with 1803 after the transfer to Eastern Europe.
Since 2009, the company numbers from 1801 onwards have been occupied by the new NMBS / SNCB series 18 locomotives (Siemens) .
