Infrabel is the 2005 from the privatization of the railways in Belgium emerged infrastructure companies . It is part of the NMBS / SNCB group and has around 12,750 employees. His tasks include the maintenance and expansion of the 3602 km long Belgian rail network , the allocation and billing of timetable routes and the coordination of Belgian train traffic.

Corporate structure

Infrabel is divided into different directorates that deal with different tasks. The Infrastructure Directorate with 7,600 employees is responsible for maintaining and modernizing the infrastructure. Her field of activity also includes the planning of new infrastructure projects, the construction of bridges and the maintenance of the existing network, for example with train service vehicles . The Network Directorate regulates train traffic via signal boxes ; while the Directorate for Access to the Network assigns and manages the timetable routes, is responsible for safety on the railway lines and plans major infrastructure projects such as the Diabolo project .

Infrabel generates revenue primarily through train path prices and public subsidies . An EBITDA of EUR 29.36 million and a profit before taxes of EUR 7.19 million are reported for the 2013 financial year .

activity

Large infrastructure projects Infrabel are the high-speed network, consisting of the high-speed lines HSL 1 , HSL 2 , HSL 3 and HSL 4 , the connection of the Brussels Airport with the Diabolo project , the construction of the train Brussels and rail projects in the Belgian ports , under among others in the port of Antwerp and in the port of Zeebrugge .

Following the liberalization of rail freight transport, Infrabel certifies railway undertakings (EVU) for the Belgian rail network and awards the network capacities. In 2014, 13 RUs received safety certificates, some of them only for certain routes, including Crossrail Benelux , DB Cargo Nederland , Euro Cargo Rail , SNCF Fret and PKP Cargo .

Infrabel is responsible for the safety of train traffic in Belgium. This includes signaling railway lines and equipping trains and lines with control and safety technology such as TBL and ETCS . Infrabel controls Belgian train traffic from 229 signal boxes via almost 11,000 signals. Other tasks include securing level crossings and raising awareness among the population. To this end, Infrabel has published numerous video clips that use chilling images to discourage unauthorized crossing of tracks at train stations and level crossings.

Delays occurring in the Belgian network are measured, registered and archived by Infrabel. For this purpose, the actual arrival time at the end station is compared with the scheduled arrival time. In order to be able to register delays at stops en route, 95 strategic measuring points were set up in 2008. A train is considered unpunctual if it is delayed by six minutes or more. Infrabel publishes monthly delay statistics, which show the general rate of delays, but also specific data such as the type of train, route, cause or missed connecting trains. In addition, a person is responsible for each delay: this person can be Infrabel itself, the responsible RU or a third party.
