NORSAR, Kjeller

NORSAR , also Norwegian Seismic Array , was established in 1968 as part of the Norwegian - US-American Agreement for the Detection of Earthquakes and Nuclear Weapons Explosions. From 1973 NORSAR was the first node of the ARPANET outside the USA. It also served as a connection point for the ARPANET connection in England and later for all of Europe . NORSAR has been an independent research foundation since 1999.

Based in Kjeller , north of Oslo , NORSAR operates seismographs in Norway and is intended to take on control tasks for Norway in the nuclear test ban treaty . NORSAR carries out seismological research , develops software and advises mineral oil companies
