Na Comerma de Sa Garita is a megalithic complex in the municipality of Alaior on the Spanish Balearic island of Menorca . It is located in the immediate vicinity of the Dolmens Ses Roques Llises and in the wider area of the Talayotic settlement of Torre d'en Galmés .

description

Na Comerma de sa Garita is a unique structure in Menorcan prehistory. It consists of two clearly differentiated parts - a building with an irregular apse shape in the north and an adjacent semicircular courtyard to the south. The building is surrounded by a double-walled wall that has been preserved up to a height of 2 m. Inside the building there are ten polylithic columns, which consist of up to seven coarse stone blocks piled up. Originally there were probably 15 columns, which were arranged in three rows running from east to west. Six heavy stones connect some pillars as roof panels. In the western part of the building there is an approx. 1.80 m high taula near the outer wall .

To the south of the building is an approximately 270 m² large courtyard, which is surrounded by a Cyclops wall. The original entrance is near its southernmost point. It is partially blocked by its fallen lintel.

One can only speculate about the function of the facility, especially because no excavation has yet taken place. The existence of a taula dates the building to the post-Talayotic period between 550 and 123 BC. This means that it can no longer be used as a residential building, because the residential buildings of this time, the Cercles, were all built the same, but do not resemble Na Comerma de Sa Garita. The spacious design suggests a public building, the taula a religious function.

Monument protection

Na Comerma de Sa Garita was declared a Historic Monument in 1966. The current registration number as a cultural asset ( Bien de Interés Cultural ) is RI-55-0000669.

Nomination for World Heritage List
