Post March

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The historical period after the March Revolution of 1848/1849 is referred to as post-March and relates to political and cultural developments. The term was formed after the much better known name Vormärz . The end of the post-march cannot be precisely defined. Politically, the decline in the suppression of the liberal and national movement after 1848/1849 can be narrowed down to around 1858/1859 ( reaction era ); it can be expected to end with the founding of the empire in 1870/1871 at the latest .

Political history

The epoch before the March Revolution is called the Vormärz, a time of political and social unrest. The March Revolution, however, did not lead to a unified, constitutional Germany. Political associations were again banned and freedom of expression restricted, similar to the 1830s.

This real era of reaction ended towards the end of the 1850s when Wilhelm I took control of Prussia in 1858 and the German question returned to the political agenda. Prince Metternich died in 1859. Although he was no longer Austria's head of government, he had once again become an advisor to the government and had shaped the policy of repressive restoration after the Congress of Vienna . There was still no freedom of the press, but censorship was now used less restrictively.

Literature and art

The cultural phase after the March Revolution is sometimes referred to as the post-March, corresponding to the pre-March phase. After the March Revolution of 1848, the literary and artistic movements changed. The German literature has undergone numerous innovations, including the beginnings of realism ( Real realism between 1850 and 1890). Some argue that the first signs of the beginning of modernity appeared in the post-March.
