Nachum Elieser Rabinovitch

Nachum Elieser Rabinovitch (* 1928 in Montreal , Canada ; † May 6, 2020 in Maʿale Adummim , Israel ) was a rabbi , Jewish scholar and Rosh Yeshiva of the Yeshivat Birkat Mosque in Maale Adumim , Israel.

Life

Rabinovitch was born in Canada in 1928, the second son of Itamar and Sara Rabbinovitch, who immigrated from Russia shortly before the First World War. At the age of 14 he began studying the Talmud and Torah with Pinchas Hirschprung, who had fled the National Socialists to Canada during the Second World War. From Hirschprung he was also a rabbi ordained .

In 1948 Rabinovitch began studying in the Ner-Israel Yeshiva in Baltimore , USA with Izchak Roderman , who also awarded him the title of rabbi. At the same time he received a Masters Degree in Mathematics from Johns Hopkins University . In 1951 he married Rachel Malka Schachtovitz, who herself came from a rabbi family and was a niece of Rabbi Roderman.

In 1952, Rabinovitch was called to the rabbinical office of Charleston , South Carolina , and founded the city's first Jewish school there.

In 1963 he returned to Toronto as a community rabbi. At the University of Toronto he received his doctorate in mathematics and gave lectures there in addition to his rabbinical office. He also worked as an editor in the journal Hadarom published by the Rabbinical Council of America , in which he published articles and responses on halachic topics. Between 1971 and 1982 he was the rector of the Jews' College in London.

From 1982 he was the Rosh Yeshiva of the Yeshivat Birkat Mosque in Maale Adumim. Rabinovitch died on May 6, 2020 at his apartment in Ma 92ale Adummim at the age of 92 .

Teaching and work

Rabinovitch was considered an expert on Maimonides and published scientific, theological and halachic works and commentaries on Maimonides' writings. His philosophical view was strongly shaped by Maimonides' logic and rationalism. She emphasized the connection between Halacha and philosophy, between Torah study and science, and between theoretical studies and practical applications in life. Rabinovitch dealt with questions on halachic topics, the State of Israel and Jewish philosophy. His students include Jonathan Sacks , Chief Rabbi of England, and Dror Fixler, physics lecturer at Bar Ilan University .
