River course

The Nachvak River flows through the central part of the Torngat Mountains National Park . It has its origin in a nameless lake 640  m high on the provincial border with Québec . The Nachvak River flows through several small lakes in the upper reaches, initially to the west, later to the south and finally to the east. At river kilometer 40 there are two larger lakes at an altitude of 420  m on the course of the river. The Nachvak River then flows another 36 km in an easterly direction through the Torngat Mountains . At the lower reaches it flows through the 10 km long Nachvak Lake . At its eastern end, it is separated from the Tasiuyak Arm , the northern arm of the Nachvak Fjord , by two alluvial cones . The Nachvak River flows between these two alluvial cones for 1.8 kilometers from the lake to the bay. The Nachvak River drains an area of 680 km². The catchment area of the Nachvak River borders on that of the Rivière Alluviaq in the northwest and that of the Rivière Koroc in the southwest .

Fish fauna

At river kilometer 20.9 there is a vertical waterfall with a height of 6.1 m. This is considered insurmountable for migratory fish . The arctic char occurs in the lower river system .
