Nail polish remover is a cosmetic product that is used to remove nail polish .
Forms of trade
Nail polish remover is sold as a liquid, gel or cream. Similarly, cotton pads available that already included nail polish remover. There are also containers that contain a sponge soaked in nail polish remover into which you insert a finger and twist it until the polish loosens. Choosing a type of remover is based on the preferences of the user and often on the price or quality of the remover.
Classification according to ingredients
Nail polish remover can be divided into two classes depending on the solvent used (acetone, acetone-free). Basically, every solvent removes fat from the nail, a particularly negative effect of acetone is often claimed, but has not been scientifically proven.
In the production of nail polishes, however, acetone is now only used occasionally, as it removes fat from the nails and makes the nails porous.
With acetone
The classic variant is the nail polish remover with acetone. Their ingredients usually include acetone , ethyl and butyl acetate , isopropanol and glycol , each in different proportions. In some cases wool wax , wool wax derivatives, fatty alcohols or other nourishing oils with a moisturizing effect are also added. Some nail polish removers also contain fragrances .
Without acetone
There are also acetone-free nail polish removers for acrylic nails , as acetone would dissolve the acrylic.
Risks
Ingesting or inhaling nail polish remover (with or without acetone) may cause vomiting, drowsiness, and confusion. With larger amounts even ataxia or coma . However, chemical burns cannot occur.
In the past, acetonitrile was also used as a nail polish remover. However, it is toxic and potentially carcinogenic. For this reason, it has been banned for use in cosmetics in the European Economic Area.
