The Patriot is the first glider designed and built in the GDR . Only one copy was made. The first glider to go into series production in the GDR was the FES-530 Lehrmeister .

history

The Patriot was created in 1951 under the direction of the aircraft construction engineer Ernst Reinecke (1921–1960), a former Heinkel and Dornier employee. Following the international trend towards two-seater training, Reinecke designed the aircraft as a two-seater for flight students and instructors, but also with a view to possible use as a performance glider. The arrangement of the seats next to each other was unusual, which is why the fuselage had a relatively large diameter. The middle-decker made entirely of wood had elliptical wings and a T-tail unit. The main wheel was designed to be retractable. It was later replaced by a removable skid. In early 1952, the Patriot's wing profile was tested on a converted Baby IIb . This enabled a speed up to 15 km / h higher than with the normal baby version.

The construction took place from November 1951 in a foundry hall of the VEB Nagema in Schmiedeberg under the patronage of the FDJ and was completed in 1952. The first flight took place on May 31 of the same year in Leipzig-Mockau . During a flight day of the "IV. Parliament of the FDJ ”the sailor was presented to the public for the first time in Leipzig-Mockau. For propaganda reasons, the ivory-colored painted aircraft had the slogan “Defend the homeland” on the underside of the wings. After completion of the testing, it received the connoisseur DDR-3000 . Ultimately, the Patriot was not produced in series because its flight performance fell short of expectations despite the good aerodynamic construction.

In September 1953 the Patriot was flown for the last time at a course in Schönhagen for training. He then went to the Laucha glider airfield for some tests , but was rarely flown there. The aircraft was finally handed over to the TU Dresden for breakage tests and exhibited hanging, where it fell down and broke some time later.
