Nahr al-Bared ( Arabic نهر البارد Nahr al-Bārid , literally: cold river ) is a Palestinian camp in northern Lebanon , 16 km north of the city of Tripoli . About 31,000 refugees live there.

history

Nahr al-Bared has existed since 1949 . It has been looked after by UNRWA since 1950 . In the 1980s there were fighting in the camp with heavy casualties. In November 2006, the radical Islamic underground organization Fatah al-Islam was founded in the camp . The training facilities and the headquarters of this organization were also located in the camp.

Between May and September 2, 2007, fierce fighting broke out between the Lebanese army and Fatah al-Islam . The camp was largely destroyed in the fighting and numerous residents fled to the nearby Beddawi refugee camp . More than 130 Fatah al-Islam fighters including their leadership, 157 Lebanese soldiers and 42 civilians died in the fighting. The Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora announced that the camp would be rebuilt under Lebanese control .

However, reconstruction began in November 2009 under the control of UNRWA. It is their most extensive project to date. In May 2015, 9,247 residents from 2,119 families were housed in new apartments. The health center and five out of six schools were also rebuilt. The total cost of the reconstruction is estimated at 305 million euros, with the EU contributing 20 million.
