The Nakajima C6N Sajun ( Japanese 彩雲 , Saiun ; " mother-of-pearl cloud ", code name of the Allies : Myrt ) was a carrier-based Japanese long-range reconnaissance aircraft and torpedo bomber of the Second World War .

development

The pattern was the first Japanese aircraft specifically designed as a carrier-based reconnaissance aircraft. The order for the development was given to Nakajima in the spring of 1942. The specifications included a top speed of 649 km / h and a range of 4954 km. The construction work was carried out by Yasuo Fukuda and Yoshizo Yamamoto. In order to shorten the test period, 23 prototypes were built from 1942 , the first of which flew for the first time on May 15, 1943. From August 1944, the series machines were delivered to the naval forces. The aircraft proved to be very successful in the reconnaissance role; a two-seat night fighter version (C6N1- S) with two 20 mm cannons to defend against the B-29 and a torpedo bomber version (C6N1-B) were also built.
