Nakamura Ken'ichi ( Japanese 中 村 研 一 ; born May 14, 1895 in Kitakyūshū ; died August 28, 1967 ) was a Japanese painter of the Yōga direction during the Taishō and Shōwa periods .

life and work

Nakamura's first teacher was Aoyama Kumaji ( 青山 熊 治 ; 1886–1932). In 1914 he went to Kyōto and continued studying under Kanekogi Takeshirō ( 鹿 子 木 孟 郎 ; 1874-1941), but moved to Tōkyō the following year. There he continued his education at the Hongo Art Institute ( 本 郷 絵 画 研究所 Hongō kaiga kenkyūjo ), then received admission to the Tōkyo State Art Academy ( 東京 美術 学校 Tōkyō bijutsu gakkō ), the forerunner of today's Geidai . In 1919 he was able to show pictures at the exhibition of the Kōfū-kai ( 光 風 会 ), the following year at the 2nd state Teiten exhibition. After that he continued to exhibit, especially on the Teiten.

In 1923 Nakamura went to Paris. There he was decisively influenced by the painter Maurice Asselin (1882–1947). In 1927 he became a member of the Société du Salon d'Automne , and in 1928 he returned to Japan. He visited England in 1937, then worked as a war painter in China and Southeast Asia during the Pacific War .

In 1920 Nakamura had been called up to train for the reserve, but had already resigned the following year due to illness. In 1938 he was sent to Shanghai to work as a war painter with Mukai Junkichi and others. In the same year, with the support of Fujishima Takeji , Kawabata Ryūshi , Koiso Ryōhei and others, the "Association of War Painter of the Land Forces of Great Japan" ( 大 日本 陸軍 従 軍 画家 協会Dai-Nihon rikugun jūgun gaka kyōkai ) was founded, with General Matsui Iwane as chairman Fujishima as deputy. The resulting war pictures were praised for their quality.

After the war, Nakamura mainly exhibited at the Kōfū-kai exhibitions. - His representative works include the picture “Time of Cooling” ( 涼 し き ひ ま Suzushisa hima ; 1921), which was awarded on the 3rd part, “Sibling group” ( 弟妹 集 ふ Teimai tsudou ; 1930), which won the Academy Award received the arts , the war picture " Kota Bharu " ( コ タ ・ バ ル Kota Baru ; 1942), which received the Asahi Culture Prize , and "Dream of Saigon" ( サ イ ゴ ン の ゆ め Saigon no yume ; 1947).

In memory of Nakamura, the city of Koganei built a museum around his studio and opened it in 2006, the "Hake-no-Mori Museum" ( は け の 森 美術館 Hake no mori bijtsukan ).
