Nakanoshima ( Japanese 中 之 島 ) is a volcanic island of the Tokara Islands . The island is 34.47 km² and, according to the 2004 census, had a total of 167 inhabitants. The island has no airport; the inhabitants live from agriculture, fishing and seasonal tourism. Sights include hot springs, a lighthouse, an observatory, and a museum of local history and folklore.

Nakanoshima is the largest island in the Tokara Archipelago with an extension of nine kilometers in length and five kilometers in width. It is located 150 kilometers south of Kyushu . In the north of the island dominates stratovolcano Otake ( 御岳 ) the island; it last erupted in 1914. Sulfur was mined there until 1944 . The climate is subtropical with a rainy season from May to September.
history
Nakanoshima has been populated for several thousand years, the island was once part of the Ryūkyū kingdom . During the Edo period , the island was part of the Satsuma fief .
