The Namadgi National Park (English Namadgi National Park ) is located in the southwestern part of the Australian Capital Territory , about 40 km from the Australian capital Canberra . The 1061 km² nature reserve covers part of the northern end of the Australian Alps . The park occupies more than half of the capital's territory and borders the Kosciuszko National Park and the Brindabella National Park and three other nature reserves in the Great Dividing Range . It was founded in 1984. The northernmost section of the Australian Alps Walking Track , a 650 km long long- distance hiking trail , leads through the Namadgi National Park .

The name Namadgi comes from the local Aborigines and refers to the mountains southwest of Canberra. The area has an important cultural significance for the indigenous population. Since April 2001, the role of the indigenous population has been contractually recognized with the government of the Australian Capital Territory and a joint administration of the area has been established.
