The Booderee National Park (English Booderee National Park ) is located in the Australian Jervis Bay Territory , on the southern coast of Jervis Bay, about 200 kilometers south of Sydney . The earlier Jervis Bay National Park called National Park occupies most of the Behwere Peninsula south of Jervis Bay and the entire Bowen Iceland one.

The current name of the national park comes from the Aboriginal language Dhurga and means something like "Bay of Abundance" or "Amount of Fish".

Flora and fauna

Around 460 native plant species have been registered in the park so far. There are also over 200 species of birds, 180 fish and over 30 mammals including around ten species of bats, 37 reptile and 17 amphibian species.

Particularly noteworthy species to see in the park are the white-bellied sea eagle , the Australian booby , the Australian pygmy shag and the black-browed albatross. You can also see humpback and right whales from the mainland .

In March 2018, 40 specimens of the spotted sacred marten , which is classified as endangered by the World Conservation Union , were relocated to the Booderee National Park . The animals were flown in from Trowunna Wildlife Park and Devils at Cradle Wildlife Park (in Cradle Mountain, not far from Trowunna Park). Another 40 animals each are to follow in 2019 and 2020.

Tourism and sightseeing

Booderee National Park is known for its white sandy beaches and is very popular with campers. The park's campsites are often fully booked months in advance. There are various hiking trails in the park that bring visitors closer to the different types of landscape.

A special feature of the Booderee National Park is that it also includes a botanical garden , the Booderee Botanic Gardens (formerly called Jervis Bay Botanic Gardens ). This was founded in 1951 as a branch of the Australian National Botanical Garden in the capital Canberra to accommodate non-winter-hardy plants in a frost-free environment. It has been part of the national park since 2000 .
