The Namazgâh

The Namazgjahu ( Albanian  also  u Namaxhah / , Serbian Намазџа Namazđah ), also Kerek Mosque called ( Kerek Xhamia , Кирик џамија Kirik džamija from Turkish Kırık Cami , broken Mosque ' ), is an open-air prayer place ( Namazxhah or намазџа Namazdža ) from the year 1455 in the city of Prizren in Kosovo . It is listed as a cultural monument - both by the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts and in the list of cultural monuments in Kosovo . The remaining structure of the Kërëk Mosque is located in the north of the city near the regional road Prizren - Gjakova . The nameنمازگاه Namazgâh originally comes fromPersianand means "place of prayer".

The square was built in 1455 by Isa Bej, a lieutenant of Sultan Mehmed II , who had just conquered the town. Located in the suburbs of Prizren, it was the first Muslim place of prayer in the city and temporarily served as a place for common prayer ( Musallā or perhaps Eidgah ).

With the expansion of the Ottoman administration, mosques such as the Myderiz Ali Efendi Mosque or the Saraçëve Mosque were built in the center of the city , which is why the prayer area was abandoned. As a result, only farmers from the area who came back from the fields or with their families used the place to pray.

In the 1950s, a warehouse was built nearby, using the old stones from the prayer area. In the 1980s the square was partially destroyed to allow the construction of a health center.

Archaeological excavations were carried out in 1969 and 1989 without protecting the building from further destruction. On the other hand, the Institute for the Protection of Prizren (IMP) drew up a plan for the restoration of Namazgâh in 2000, which was partially funded by the Turkish government. Work began on October 10, 2001. The restored site was inaugurated in April 2002.
