The Judds
The Judds were one of the most successful duos in country music in the 1980s . It consisted of mother Naomi Judd (born January 11, 1946 as Dianna Ellen Judd ) and daughter Wynonna Judd (born May 30, 1964 as Christina Ciminella in Ashland, Kentucky ).
Beginnings
Her mother was only eighteen when Wynonna was born. After the birth of their second daughter Ashley and subsequent divorce, Naomi moved to Los Angeles with her two children . There she worked as a model or as a typist in film productions. In 1976 she returned to Kentucky where she began training as a nurse.
Daughter Wynonna showed a remarkable singing talent from a young age. Naomi moved her family to Nashville , the heart of country music , in hopes of a career . Here she found a job as a nurse while her daughters attended school.
Career
In Nashville, mother and daughter took every opportunity to appear in public. Gradually the scene became aware of the two. After a demo tape had found their way to the RCA label, the Judds were invited to audition. After just 30 minutes, the record company decided to sign Naomi and Wynonna.
Their first single, Had A Dream (For The Heart) , was released in late 1983 and made it into the top 20 straight away. A year later, Mama He's Crazy and Why Not Me reached number one. In the same year they were awarded the Grammy “Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal” and other important prizes. Why Not Me was CMA “Single of the Year”. In addition to the quality of her songs, this was mainly due to Wynonna's supporting voice, which was perfectly complemented by her mother's harmony singing.
In the years that followed, numerous number 1 hits were produced (14 in total) and numerous awards were won. Their albums were equally successful and almost without exception achieved gold or platinum status. At the end of the decade, they achieved a respectable fifth place for country singers in Billboard's "Artist of the Decade" vote. At the height of her career, Naomi developed chronic hepatitis . After a triumphant and, thanks to extensive television broadcasts, extremely lucrative farewell tour in 1991, the Judds ended their career. Wynonna continued her solo career while Naomi wrote an autobiography. In 1999 they first appeared together again. A year later, they went on tour to the album The Judds Reunion Live was released. The Last Encore Tour followed in 2011 .
