Napoleon Nolsøe

Napoleon Nolsøe (born August 26, 1809 in Tórshavn , Faroe Islands , † February 28, 1877 ibid) was a Faroese doctor. His collection of Faroese ballads gained importance .

Napoleon was born in 1809 to Jacob Nolsøe and Anne Cathrine Pedersdatter. The national hero Nólsoyar Páll was his uncle.

In 1841 he completed his training as a doctor (cand. Med.) And was the island doctor of Suðuroy , 1858-1865 then medical officer of the Faroe Islands.

In the years 1840 to 1851 he compiled a huge number of the ballads that had previously only been passed down orally, which contributed significantly to the survival of the Faroese language . The manuscript of his three-volume work formed a cornerstone of the 16-volume Corpus carminum Færoensium by Svend Grundtvig and Jørgen Bloch .

Among the most famous ballads collected by Napoleon Nolsøes are the Sigur songs . The song Regin Smiður from this cycle is still one of the most popular ballads and was reinterpreted in 2003 by the heavy metal group Týr .

From 1852 to 1854 and from 1865 to 1869 Nolsøe was Løgtings MP .
