The Napoleon Tower is a historic listed building in Mildensee , a district of Dessau-Roßlau in Saxony-Anhalt .

history

Prince Leopold III. Friedrich Franz had his master builder Carlo Ignazio Pozzi built a tomb for himself between 1809 and 1812 on an artificial hill made of field stones . This classicist building was modeled on the Tower of the Winds in Athens and was initially called the Tower of the Eight Winds , but was quickly given the name Napoleon's Tower , contrary to the will of the prince. A bust of Napoleon is said to have stood in the entrance area of the tower until around 1860 .

The prince lost interest in the tower when it turned out that the building was in danger of flooding and therefore not suitable as a grave monument in his eyes. Apparently, therefore, he also decided not to furnish the tower interior. However, in October 1935, a body was laid out in the Napoleon storm, namely that of the Reich governor of Dessau, Wilhelm Friedrich Loeper . After that, the tower was named Loeperturm for ten years . Leopold III. Friedrich Franz himself was buried next to his wife in the Walderseer church, Loeper later buried in the Mildensee cemetery.

The tower was badly damaged during the Elbe floods in 2002 when its basement was flooded. The renovation was completed in 2005. An exhibition on the occasion of Christian Gebhard Nordmann's 250th birthday was to be held on the upper floor of the Napoleon Tower.
