Naqura ( Arabic الناقورة an-Nāqūra ) is a village in southern Lebanon with about 4500 inhabitants . It is on the Mediterranean Sea , on the border with Israel .

In terms of area, however, it is even larger than the nearby city of Tire .

The UNIFIL has been here since 23. March 1978 their headquarters .

In March 1978 Naqura was also occupied by the Israeli army for seven days. Israel had invaded southern Lebanon as part of Operation Litani . According to Israeli sources, the aim was to fight the PLO. Estimates of casualties on the Lebanese side range from 300 to 2,000 dead.

In 1982 Israel invaded Lebanon and occupied the entire south of the country up to and including parts of the capital Beirut. Between 1985 and 2000, southern Lebanon was occupied by Israel and the South Lebanese Army , allied with Israel .
