Nardwuar the Human napkin

Nardwuar the Human Napkin (born John Ruskin , born July 5, 1968 in Vancouver ) is a Canadian reporter and musician .

John Ruskin officially changed his name in 1986. He chose Nardwuar as an example of a stupid artificial name ("such as Sting"). He chose Human in relation to the song Human Fly by The Cramps und Napkin because he was amazed that they were not known in the USA (they are called napkin there ).

Career

Nardwuar began his career in the 1980s as a DJ on the University of British Columbia radio station CITR. Since October 1987 he has hosted a weekly program there, always at the same airtime, every Friday from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. On his first show he spoke to the Canadian punk band DOA , which he asked about their preferred soap, among other things. In the following years he interviewed music greats such as James Brown , Sonic Youth , Snoop Doggy Dogg , Krist Novoselic , Motörhead and, again and again, Jello Biafra, live in the studio or over the phone . His disrespectful and often annoying manner sometimes led to conversations being broken off very quickly, for example with Alice Cooper , Courtney Love or Flea . The mostly unannounced calls to politicians like Gerald Ford or Dan Quayle , who could not answer the question about the name of the Canadian Prime Minister and hung up, were particularly brief . To celebrate his 20th radio anniversary, Nardwuar hosted a 20 hour marathon show on CTIR.

Despite the unusual interview style, Nardwuar is an outspoken music expert, especially in the field of indie rock, and is known for his meticulous preparation for interviews in which he surprises his guests with detailed questions, old photos and gifts.

Since 1999, Nardwuar's interviews have also been an integral part of MuchMusic's program , the Canadian equivalent of MTV . In the same year he suffered a brain aneurysm. The Canadian media reported from his sickbed. He also moderates some programs and conducts interviews on CBC 3. The bonus material on the DVD of the documentary Heavy Metal Parking Lot , which was released in 2006, includes an interview by Nardwuar with Judas Priest singer Rob Halford , which Nardwuar opens with the question to the heavy metal star: “ Who are you? "(In English:" Who are you? ").

In addition to his work as a radio and television reporter, Nardwuar is also known as the lead singer and keyboardist of the indie rock band Evaporators and also plays with Thee Goblins .

On December 9, 2015, it was announced that Nardwuar suffered a stroke on December 4, 2015 after a party at the Astoria Club in Vancouver . After inpatient treatment at Vancouver General Hospital , he was released on December 13th.

Well-known interviews

Nardwuar is known for sneaking into official press conferences of high-ranking politicians and asking them embarrassing or undiplomatic questions. So he greeted Mikhail Gorbachev with "Durshney rockin 'oos slabotney sviet" ( Keep on rockin' in a free world ( Neil Young )) and then asked him which head of state wears the biggest pants.

In 1997, Nardwuar appeared in an official press conference given by Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien . He asked Chrétien about punk rock and what he thought of the highly controversial use of pepper spray against protesters at the APEC conference. Chrétien replied with the sentence: "For me, pepper, I put it on my plate.". In the song Suharto Stomp by Nardwuar's band The Evaporators , this sentence can be heard as a soundbite . In his memoir, Chrétien attempted to gloss over his lapsus , claiming that all the journalists yelled at at the meeting. Records disproved this statement. In 2007 Nardwuar conducted an interview with Chrétien about this portrayal.
