geography

Collaroy and Narrabeen population pyramid. Status 2014

Narrabeen is a suburb on the eastern edge of Sydney, north of Port Jackson . To the north and west it is bordered by Narrabeen Lake , which is north of North Narrabeen . To the south is the Collaroy Plateau and the adjacent district of Collaroy with Collaroy Beach.

Beach

Narrabeen Beach (Collaroy-Narrabeen Beach) stretches 2.5 kilometers along the coast. It flows smoothly into Collaroy Beach. Narrabeen does not have a rock pool, a swimming pool sunk into the rocks. The nearest rock pools are on the beaches of the adjacent suburbs of Collaroy and North Narrabeen.

The beach area of Narrabeen and the buildings built close to the coast, as well as the entire north coast of Sydney, are severely threatened by erosion processes . The town's buildings were also damaged by storms in 1920, 1945, 1967, 1974 and 2016.

On June 6, 2016, waves up to 8 meters high hit Narrabeen Beach in a storm. In doing so, they eroded the beach line back up to 50 meters. Lake water penetrated into the streets of the village. The waves damaged some residential buildings near the coast. People from many houses and from a block of flats by the sea, Narrabeen Lake and on slopes had to be evacuated in the course of the storm because of water and the risk of landslides.

history

It is believed that the name Narrabeen derives from Narrabine, a local tribe word for swan.

The now independent suburb of Collaroy once belonged to Narrabeen, but was then split off and named after the ship SS Collaroy that was stranded on Collaroy Beach.

In January 2005, a 4,000-year-old skeleton of a male Aboriginal was discovered next to a bus stop in Narrabeen , who was killed by a spear. He was given the name Narrabeen Man . It is the third oldest skeleton in Australia after the Mungo Man and the Mungo Lady .
