Narusawa-hyōketsu ( Japanese 鳴 沢 氷 穴 , German "Narusawa Ice Cave") is an ice cave near the village of Narusawa in Yamanashi Prefecture in Japan .
The entrance to the Narusawa Ice Cave is on the western edge of the Aokigahara Forest. It is about 137.2 m long, the floor of the cave is about 21 m below the surface of the earth. It is a lava tube that was formed by the eruption of Mount Fuji in AD 864. The room temperatures fluctuate all year round around freezing point (between −2 ° C and +3 ° C), which is why impressive stalactites made of ice can be seen in it permanently . In the Edo period , ice was harvested and used to cool food. In the Taisho period the cave primarily served as a natural refrigerator for silkworm - cocoons . The Narusawa Ice Cave has been a protected natural monument since 1929 .
