The nose doctor fish are a subfamily of the doctor fish , which consists of only one genus of the same name . In the surgeonfish family, they are the giants. The long-nosed surgeonfish can grow up to a meter in length.

The nose doctor fish have two sharp, thorn-like horn plates at the root of the tail, with which they can defend themselves and also injure people. Typical for them is a bulge on the forehead - the "nose".

Nose doctor fish live on zooplankton , which they hunt near coral reefs . Unlike other surgeon fish species, nasal surgeon fish do not form feeding schools. They can mainly be observed individually or in small groups.
