The Pepsi 420 was a race in the NASCAR Winston Cup . It was held annually from 1958 to 1984 on the Nashville Speedway USA . When it was first held in 1958, the race distance was only 200 miles. In 1959 it was increased to 300 miles to be driven and in 1960 to 400 miles to be driven. From 1961 to 1962 the race was called the "Nashville 500", so that even 500 miles had to be completed. However, the race was shortened in 1961 due to rain, so that the race distance was again around 400 miles. The race in 1962 was the full distance, making it the longest Winston Cup race ever held at Nashville Speedway USA. From 1963 to 1969, the race was called "Nashville 400" again. From 1970 420 laps had to be driven.
After disputes about the managerial question of the Speedway in 1985, NASCAR decided to stop racing at the Nashville Speedway USA from the 1985 season.
