Bobby Isaac (born August 1, 1932 in Catawba , North Carolina , † August 14, 1977 in Hickory , North Carolina) was an American racing driver and champion in the NASCAR Grand National series.
Isaac grew up on a farm in Catawba , North Carolina, the second youngest of nine children. He finished school after sixth grade, which falsely led to the rumor that he could neither read nor write.
Career
Isaac began professional racing in 1956, but it took seven years to advance to NASCAR's Grand National Series. In the 1970 season he won the championship in the Dodge Charger Daytona with the starting number 71. Together with his crew chief Harry Hyde, he set a speed record on a closed circuit at the Talladega Superspeedway in November 1970.
During his career in NASCAR's top racing series, Isaac won a total of 37 races, eleven of them in his championship season in 1970. He also achieved 50 pole positions, including 20 in the 1969 season, which is still a record as of 2020. Isaac resigned from racing because an inner voice reportedly warned him that he would die if he continued racing.
death
Bobby Isaac died on August 14, 1977 when he pulled out of the race 25 laps from the finish in a Late Model Sportsman series race at Hickory Motor Speedway and died of a heart attack .
