Nasio Fontaine (* 1969 in Carte-Bois , Dominica ) is a Dominican Rastafarian and reggae musician.

Life

Nasio Fontaine was born the youngest of seven children. He started singing in school and church at the age of eight. The poor conditions in which he lived forced him to creatively build all kinds of musical instruments himself, with which he soon appeared in his school's annual talent competitions. He was particularly inspired by the musical genres Calypso , Soca and Zouk ; However, he only found his final style when he moved to the neighboring island of Sint Maarten in 1981 , where he came into contact with reggae and Rastafari . At the age of 13, he told his parents that he no longer wanted to go to church, and they let him. From that moment on he followed a strict vegetarian diet and studied the Rastafarian religion, according to which he has lived ever since.

Dismissed from school, he worked as a day laborer and lived in simple circumstances, saved his money as best he could and dreamed of making music. In the meantime, friends were teaching him chords and he even learned to write properly, until in 1986 he had saved enough money and produced his first song Born to be free at his own expense. He sold 5,000 singles straight away. This brought him a small financial gain and, above all, a lot of prestige in Dominica and the Caribbean area, so that he was voted national artist of the year . However, he was not blinded by this and returned to his work as a day laborer. He continued this work until 1990 he had enough money again to record another record. This was so successful that from then on he could devote himself exclusively to music.

Today he lives in New York with his wife .
