Natalie Weir

Natalie Weir (* 1967 in Townsville ) is an Australian dancer and choreographer .

Weir began her education with Ann Roberts and performed with their North Queensland Ballet Company (now Dancenorth ) in Townsville. She continued her education with Maggi Sietsma at the Kelvin Grove College of Advanced Education at Queensland University of Technology and was one of the founding members of their Expressions Dance Company (EDC). In 1985 she received her first commission as a choreographer from Sietsma.

In the following years numerous choreographies were created, among others for the EDC, the West Australian Ballet , the Australian Dance Theater , Dance North and Tasdance . As choreographer in residence , she created seven works for the Queensland BAllet in 1994 and three works for the Australian Ballet in 2000 . Two choreographies were created for the American Ballet Theater's Studio Company , and the American Ballet Theater (ABT) performed their piece Jabula in New York , which was a great success with audiences and critics. She was involved in the ABT production Within You, Without You (in honor of George Harrison ) and created a solo for Ethan Steiffel , which he later performed at the Marjinsky Festival in Kirow.

Weir received the Choo San Goh Award for the piece Steppenwolfe realized with the Houston Ballet . She also received the Australia Council Fellowship and the Lord Mayor's Fellowship , which enabled her to study in Europe with the Rambert Dance Company , the Nederlands Dance Company and the Siobhan Davies Dance Company . In 2003 she created the harmonium for the American Ballet Theater at the Metropolitan Opera , then a full version of Turandot , which won the Hong Kong Dance Award in 2004, and Madama Butterfly for the Hong Kong Ballet .

She realized Icarus with the dance company Gießen of the Stadttheater Gießen , and as redident artist of the Queensland Ballet she created versions of Wuthering Heights , Orpheus and Petrushka . She toured Germany with the Queensland Ballet with The Unwritten . In 2008 she was one of 27 globally selected participants in the Dance East Retreat for Future Leaders and Directors at Brockett Hall in the UK. In 2009 she became artistic director of the Expressions Dance Company . Works like where the heart is , R&J , When Time Stops , The Red Shoes , 7 Deadly Sins , Behind Closed Doors , Carmen Sweet and The Host were created here .
