Natan ha-Babli (Tannait)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

R. Natan ha-Babli ( Natan the Babylonians - not to be confused with the 10th century historian of the same name ) was a Jewish scholar of antiquity, is counted among the 4th generation of Tannaites and worked in the second century AD.

He was a contemporary and official of R. Simeon b. Gamaliel III. and Rabbi Meir .

R. Natan was nicknamed ha-Babli because he came from Babylonia at the time of Rabban Simeon ben Gamaliel II from there to Palestine. Together with R. Meir, he held important functions at his court. An attempt to disempower the Patriarch together with Meir failed, the two were excluded from further meetings of the Synhedrion , but were soon recalled because of their extraordinary erudition. From then on, however, their doctrines had to be passed on anonymously (Natan = some mean ; Meir = others mean ). Some time later there was a reconciliation between Nathan and the Patriarch.

R. Natan often found himself in conflict with Yehuda ha-Nasi . The review of Abot attributed to Abot de Rabbi Natan is occasionally attributed to him. He is also said to be the author of the Baraita Mem tet middot ( containing mathematics and haggadic ). In any case, Natan had a larger share in the editing of the Mishnah because of the use of his texts by Yehuda ha-Nasi.
