Paul Erich Oehme (born August 8, 1889 in Berthelsdorf near Freiberg , † October 23, 1970 in Meißen ) was a German sculptor.

life and work

Erich Oehme was born in Berthelsdorf near Freiberg in 1889 as the ninth child of the Oehme family. His siblings include Hugo Oehme and Arthur Oehme .

From 1905 to 1908 Erich Oehme studied with the Dresden sculptor Friedrich Burghardt and took part in evening courses at the Dresden School of Applied Arts . From 1909 to 1911 he went on a journey to Berlin and for two years to Italy . From November 13, 1911 to August 17, 1912, he initially worked for the Nymphenburg porcelain factory .

From 1912 Erich Oehme worked for the Meissen porcelain manufacture . He also studied animal anatomy with Wilhelm Ellenberger at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Dresden . After the First World War , Oehme studied as a master student of Selmar Werner at the Academy in Dresden until 1920 . Oehme also attended anatomy lectures with Hermann Dittrich .

In the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory, he rose from an auxiliary modeller to the artistic director of the design department (1936). He also worked with Bóttger stoneware and designed medals. In 1944 he was relieved of his post. In 1948 he became artistic director of VVB Keramik Erfurt . Porcelain sculptures based on designs by Oehme were also produced by the porcelain manufacturers Volkstedt and Lichte .

Erich Oehme was best known for his expressive animal sculptures.
