Maria Cecilia Nathalie Janotha (born June 8, 1856 in Warsaw , † June 9, 1932 in The Hague ) was a Polish pianist and composer.

Life

Nathalie Janoatha was a daughter of the pianist Juliusz Janotha (1819–1883), who was a professor at the Warsaw Conservatory . Her mother was Anne Janotha geb. Oleszczyńska, a daughter of the painter Antoni Oleszczyński (1794–1879).

From October 1869 she studied together with Eugenie Schumann, a daughter of Clara Schumann , with Ernst Rudorff (piano) at the Berlin Conservatory , and with Clara Schumann's half-brother Woldemar Bargiel (counterpoint).

From 1871 to at least 1874 she was tutored by Clara Schumann herself, who expressed herself very positively about her several times. She then gave concerts all over Europe, including America. From the end of the 1880s she worked in London , in 1885 she was appointed royal Prussian court pianist. In 1915, during the First World War , she had to leave England because of her relations with Prussia and moved to The Hague.

She was an outstanding Chopin interpreter and left around 400 of her own works. She also worked as a translator and editor.
