Nathan Löwenstein von Opoka (born February 14, 1859 in Butschowitz in Moravia , † May 21, 1929 in Lemberg ) was an Austrian-Polish parliamentarian and lawyer of Jewish descent.

Life

Nathan Löwenstein was born as the son of Lviv Rabbi Bernhard Löwenstein (1821–1889) and Lina born. Goldberg born. He studied law at the universities of Vienna , Cracow (doctorate 1884) and Leipzig . He used the income from his law firm to buy several estates. From 1889 he was a member of the Galician Musical Society, from 1893 of the Lviv Bar Association. He promoted the assimilation of the Jewish population with the Polish people. In 1894 he participated in the organization of the General State Exhibition in Lemberg. In 1912 he added the addition "von Opoka" to his family name.

From 1894 to 1929 he was a member of the Lviv City Council. From 1895 to 1914 he was elected to the Galician Landtag . From 1907 to 1917 he was a member of the XI. and XII. Legislative period of the Austrian House of Representatives . He was a co-founder of the Galician Savings Bank. In 1918 he participated as a defender in the oath crisis trial against the Polish legionnaires before the military court in Máramarossziget . In 1922 he ended his political activity. Nathan Löwenstein was a co-founder of the Lviv Jewish Citizens' Club. Above all, he promoted the writer Jonas Kreppel .

His son Stanisław Opoka-Loewenstein (1890-1944) was a historian and socialist activist.
